The first chapter of this journey across the spectrum of drum&bass begins with ASC’s “Black Sea” remix, where sweeping atmospherics weave in and out of an abstract steppa with syncopated half-time sequences; all too perfect a segue to Mindmapper’s “Orbital Orchestra,” where tribal percussives, tape-delayed midrange fx, and modulated synth pads dance in and out of a deep-space sub wall. DBR (UK) and Marginal continue the minimal vibe with the future-dub flavors of “Floating Tribe,” but all of this changes when Dub Phizix’s “Between Us” drops. This menacing neuro stomper picks up the pace for Edward Oberon’s “Void,” an edgy trip down the rabbit hole filled with spliced bass edits and techno stabs that flash in and out of shuffling drums and bouncing low ends. Push up your lighta for the heavyweight amens in Stranjah’s dirty “J-Train” and Theory’s timeless rave anthem “Jungle Soul,” which pay tribute to the oldskool sound; both tunes will have heads calling for the rewind! Finally, retreat from the galloping pace of the thundering drums with Slider & Expose’s “There is Hope,” which brings the vibe back to its deeper roots for a denouement to an LP that is both its namesake and Translation Recordings’ most ambitious effort yet!

A Hawai’i native and a member of O’ahu’s original DJ collective “Sisters in Sound,” Toki has been behind Honolulu’s decks since 2002 dropping drum ‘n bass and breaking out into other genres more recently to include dubstep, electro and breakbeats among a host of other bass binding sounds. The collective held a weekly residence, “Electro-Lyfe” at swanky Indigo Restaurant in downtown Honolulu from 2005 to 2007 sampling from a collection of off the wall diverse genres and hosting some of the local and national talent in and around breakbeats, electro, dance punk, indie pop and our special favorite, drum ‘n bass.

Toki partnered up with DJ Saya of the Pacific Jungle crew for a number of one offs, dubbed “Echoplex” which brought the jungle scene together for tag team sets and which also went on to host big names including DJ Killjoy (1/2 of Concord Dawn, reppin’ New Zealand) and Red One.

Fast forward to 2008 and Hawai’i’s finest ladies of drum ‘n bass partnered up again for “Broken Liquid,” held at Bar 35 in downtown Honolulu for two years, a night known for the smooth, sensual, deeper and atmospheric drum ‘n bass sounds in the front lounge and the bass crunching ball blasting breaks brought to you courtesy dubstep, grime and garage (among others) out on the patio. Toki’s been featured at Subphonix, Hawai’i’s hottest monthly drum ‘n bass night (Mercury Bar, Chaplain Lane, Downtown Honolulu; First Fridays of every month), Girlfest Hawaii, Lift Sessions at Waikiki’s Lotus nightclub and Hawai’i’s First Thursday Poetry Slam among tons of other events.
